Virginia Medicaid Newsletter

We republish the Virginia DMAS Partner Points newsletter for the families in our practice — with a plain-language summary of what each edition means for your coverage. The original is on DMAS GovDelivery; the practical takeaways are below.

The practical takeaways

The DMAS Partner Points newsletter is written for community partners — case workers, schools, providers. Below is the same information translated for parents, drawn from the latest edition (July 2024). When in doubt about anything Medicaid-related, call our office and we’ll help.

  • If you have Medicaid through a managed-care plan (Aetna, Anthem, Molina, Sentara, United), call your plan directly for non-emergency rides — five business days’ notice is usually required
  • Fee-for-Service Medicaid families schedule rides through Modivcare at 1-866-386-1971
  • Update your address, income, and household members at coverva.org as soon as anything changes — wrong info on file is the #1 reason people lose coverage
  • You can change your Medicaid health plan once a year during open enrollment, through the Cardinal Care app or the DMAS website
  • To find a Medicaid-accepting provider, use “Find a Provider” on the DMAS website (or just call us — we know which plans work where)
  • Suspect Medicaid fraud? Report it confidentially: 1-866-486-1971 or recipientfraud@dmas.virginia.gov

Partner Points: full FAQ from DMAS

Reprinted from the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services. Phone numbers and instructions are as published by DMAS — call our office if anything’s changed.

How do I file an appeal?

Visit the DMAS website and look for the “Applicant/Member Appeals Resources” section — it has the forms and PDFs you need to file an appeal or check the status of one already in progress.

What’s the difference between Fee-for-Service and Managed Care?

Fee-for-Service (FFS) is for members with limited income or resources and is processed through your local Department of Social Services office. Managed Care members are assigned to a health plan (MCO) by an Enrollment Broker, typically within 30 days of eligibility being entered into VaMMIS.

How do I schedule a non-emergency medical ride?

If you have Fee-for-Service Medicaid, call Modivcare at 1-866-386-1971. You usually need to give five business days’ notice. If you’re on a managed-care plan, call your plan directly: • Aetna: 1-800-734-0430 • Anthem: 1-855-325-7581 • Molina: 1-833-273-7416 • Sentara: 1-877-892-3986 • United Health: 1-844-604-2078

How do I update my address, income, or household info?

Go to coverva.org and use the “Update your Information” tab under the Members section. Keeping this current is the single most important thing you can do to avoid losing coverage by mistake.

How do I cancel coverage?

Send a written request to your local Department of Social Services office. We don’t recommend cancelling without checking with us first — there are often better options.

Can I change my health plan?

Yes — once a year during open enrollment. Make changes through the DMAS website or the Cardinal Care App.

How do I find a doctor or specialist who takes Medicaid?

Use the “Find a Provider” feature on the DMAS website for either FFS or MCO directories. For pediatric specialists in Northern Virginia, call us — we work with most of them and can save you the search.

How do I report Medicaid fraud?

Call 1-866-486-1971 or email recipientfraud@dmas.virginia.gov. Reports can be made confidentially.
