Preoperative Appointments

Surgery is a big deal — even when the procedure is small. A pre-op appointment makes sure your child is healthy enough for anesthesia, that the surgical team has the information they need, and that you leave with a clear plan for the day of surgery and the recovery that follows.

What We Check

What we cover in the room

  • Recent illnesses, fevers, or symptoms that could affect anesthesia safety
  • Chronic conditions and how they’re currently controlled
  • Current medications, including over-the-counter and supplements — some need to be paused
  • Allergies, especially to medications, latex, or anesthetics
  • Family history of anesthesia complications
  • Heart, lung, and airway exam
  • Pre-op labs or testing if requested by the surgeon

Care We Provide

Your visit includes

Thorough pre-op exam

We do a focused exam looking at the things that matter most for anesthesia — heart, lungs, airway, and overall health.

Surgical clearance paperwork

We complete the pre-op forms the surgical team requires and send them ahead — no scrambling on the morning of surgery.

Coordination with the surgical team

If something needs to be communicated — chronic condition, recent illness, medication question — we reach out directly.

Plain-language prep instructions

What to eat (or not), what medications to take, when to arrive, and what recovery typically looks like for your child’s procedure.

Recent illness assessment

If your child has been sick recently, we help you decide whether surgery should proceed or be rescheduled — talking with the surgeon when needed.

Recovery planning

What to expect at home — pain, eating, school, follow-up. We anchor the recovery plan you got from the surgeon.

FAQs

Questions families ask

When should the pre-op visit happen?

Usually within 30 days of the scheduled surgery. Some surgical centers require it within 14 days. Check the surgeon’s instructions and call us early — we’ll fit you in.

What if my child gets sick right before surgery?

Call us. A cold, fever, or recent infection can change anesthesia safety. We’ll evaluate and talk with the surgeon about whether to proceed or reschedule. Don’t cancel without talking to us first — minor symptoms often don’t require postponement.

Do you do labs at the visit?

We do basic in-office bloodwork or urine tests when the surgeon requests them. If specialized testing is needed, we’ll arrange it ahead of time so results are ready.

Should we stop any medications before surgery?

Possibly. NSAIDs (ibuprofen), some supplements, and certain prescription medications need to pause before anesthesia. We review your child’s full list and tell you what to stop and when.

What if the surgeon already cleared my child — do we still need to see you?

Sometimes. Some surgical centers require pediatrician clearance separately. Some are fine with the surgeon’s evaluation alone. Read the instructions or call us — we’ll figure it out together.

Can you talk directly to the surgical team?

Yes — and we will when it helps. If your child has a chronic condition, recent illness, or anything complicated, we contact the surgical team directly so everyone is on the same page.
